Contemporary Country Cottages

Most people think the words “family holiday” and “relaxing” can’t go hand in hand. These people haven’t been to Gitcombe Country Cottages in Totnes.

Even as a parent of two very small children when I go away I dream of switching off, chilling out and feeling calm and relaxed. I hear laughter from weary mums everywhere, but bear with me.

I’ve found a place where this dream became a reality, even with a four-year-old and boisterous two-year-old in tow.

If you didn’t have directions, you could easily miss the turning down to Gitcombe estate.

But somewhere off the road between Totnes and Dartmouth we descended down a farmtrack to find a pretty Georgian farmhouse sheltering in a natural bowl with an outdoor pool occupying a terrific sun trap.

Further investigation revealed a tennis court, a cluster of outbuildings converted into cottages, and up the hill, an indoor pool, steam and sauna, and outdoor hot tub with to-die-for views of the rolling Devon countryside.

50 Best Cottages for Summer

Planning a staycation?  Then we here at The Sunday Times have tracked down great British boltholes of all styles & sizes.

Smuggled away between Dartmoor and the Blue Flag beach at Blackpool Sands, Gitcombe Estate is 14 acres of family holiday heaven.  The eight cottages share indoor and outdoor pools, a sauna, steam room, outdoor hot tub, adventure playground and tennis court; our favourite is Gitcombe House, a flagstoned-floored farmhouse that would suit two families!

The Guardian Travel Section: Cool cottages in.... Devon

We creamed off Devon's most stylish coastal and country cottages, from a cosy bolthole for two... The secluded Gitcombe Cottages Estate is just 20 minutes from two blue-flag beaches, Blackpool Sands and Bantham. The Hayloft (sleeps two plus travel cot) is one of eight child-friendly Scandinanvian-style cottages, with log fire iPod dock and private deck. There are great views down the valley, plus indoor and outdoor pools, sauna/steam rooms, play areas and tennis court. 16 Feb 2013

The fabulous 50...Here are the finest, freshest hotels, websites, gadgets, bars, luggage and in-flight pyjamas in the world...

No 40...Pray for rain... If your last holiday in the West Country was a wash out, take the kids to Gitcombe House, a former farm in Devon's South Hams that's been converted into self-catering cottages. You get tennis and - in case it does pour - a heated indoor pool, a sauna, a steam room and a soft-play area.

Baby & Me, London

Negotiating the tricky territory of toddlers and holidays is a perpetual challenge for even the most steely-nerved of parents. Delayed flights, uber sniffy hotels and mandatory tummy bugs are enough to practically put you off family holidays for life. But finding a destination where kids can play, romping around the great outdoors to their heart's content and where parents can actually relax in style is now no longer a complete contradiction in terms.

Of course children aren't generally impressed by crisp bed linen, Scandinavian style décor or Farrow & Ball muted shades. At Gitcombe, it's the outdoor and indoor pools, soft play barn and hand-carved adventure playground in the extensive grounds that will keep them gloriously occupied, year round, from dawn until dusk... The eight cottages offer stylish stays to families who want more than a dash of luxury but in a setting that allows the young and the old to utterly relax and enjoy.

Cheshire Life

It's easy to see why so many people are charmed by this country estate with luxurious self-catering cottages...If you don't want to venture far there are indoor and outdoor pools, a sauna and steam room and an outdoor jacuzzi with views you could spend all day gazing at...What Yve and Mike have created here is an idyllic allyear round country retreat. They're now getting ready for the festive season ? all cottages come complete with a real Christmas tree. Little wonder Cheshire folk like it so much here. Autumn 2012

Where does one start? The owners, Yve and Mike, have thought of everything. Yes. Everything. This is a place where style meets comfort meets real life. Beautifully finished cottages offer every modern convenience from underfloor heating, Dualit toasters and Ipod connectivity to fluffy white towels, private terraces and children's tableware.

Secreted away in a private valley just outside the village of Cornworthy in Devon, Gitcombe is a cluster of just eight contemporary cottages set in 14 mammoth acres of countryside ? which means you certainly won't be elbowing your way through a crowd to get to the pool. Abundant facilities are on offer from an outdoor and an indoor swimming pool, tennis court, a stunning wooden adventure playground, a spa, steam room, and outdoor jacuzzi.

With local beaches, and the towns of Dartmouth and Totnes just a short 20 minute drive away you can combine the best of all worlds. Watch the children play while you enjoy your morning coffee on your private terrace. Later, make your way to the stunning Blackpool Sands which was voted the Best Family Beach by Conde Naste Traveller for crabbing or sailing. Finish your lazy day at The Seahorse Restaurant in Dartmouth where you can savour freshly grilled local seafood as you watch the waves roll in. Back at Gitcombe, wrap up in plump duvets and marvel at the utter peace gained from a day spent in the beautiful countryside. 2012

Clifton Life

Chic, contemporary self catering cottages set in classic rolling Devon scenery. The emphasis is on family friendly, with tasteful outdoor play areas as well as indoor spa and pool. With just eight cottages, the guest-to-facility ratio is pleasingly high. Food heroes Riverford Organic have their farm shop nearby and will deliver a hamper to order. New Year 2011

Mail On Sunday, Travel supplement

The fantastic facilities include an outdoor tennis court and swimming pool and an indoor complex with another pool and soft play area. Sharing 14 acres between just eight cottages, Gitcombe feels like your own private holiday manor...From our cottage balcony we had a stunning view of the estate and across the valley, of Dartmoor National Park.

Bath Life

A fine country home set in a magical, secluded valley...Pick up provisions at the excellent Riverford Organic Farm shop, lay in a few bottles of wine, and make the most of the views from your terrace across the green and pleasant countryside for which Devon is justly famous.

Belfast Telegraph

The hamlets and villages of Devon are about as far from the world's trouble spots as you can get. This place (Gitcombe) made me enthusiastic about doing nothing. If we did venture out the door there was plenty to do without going near the car...Even with all this, and the place being fully booked for the weekend, it was generally so still as if no one else was there.

the cottage was child friendly

"Wow!" said the kids when we arrived. Although the chic furnishing made us a touch paranoid about sticky fingerprints

After Hours - Institute of Directors

For a taste of heaven, head to south Devon. I'm sure this isn't the county's official slogan but it should be. There are not many places in the UK that can match Devon for natural good looks... All in all, Gitcombe is the perfect spot to enjoy some homely autumn sun.

Saturday Telegraph

Last September, I went with my wife and young son to Gitcombe, a cluster of self-catering cottages down a private lane in deeply rural south Devon, between Totnes and Dartmouth. It was blowing a gale and raining buckets, but the weather didn't dampen our spirits. After unloading our car we made a beeline for Gitcombe's splendid heated indoor swimming pool, where we spent much of the afternoon. When our two-year old eventually tired of the pool, we let him expend more energy in the soft-cushioned playroom. The rental agency English Country Cottages had recommended Gitcombe as the best quality family-friendly, family-oriented cottage complex on its books. Gitcombe note: we are no longer represented by English Country Cottages.
